- 9/27/07- I added a link to a songlist/setlist to the BIO page
- 7/5/07- We made it to Richardson!!! We got moved in last weekend,
and did a good deal of unpacking. Right now we're chilling at the in-laws in Waskom, TX,
awaiting a trip to Destin, FL for a vacation with the whole family. It'll be nice to get a
vacation to reset after all of that planning, sorting, packing, and moving before we kick
off life in Dallas in full-force.
- We don't have internet yet in our new home, so be patient with me if you've been trying
to contact me. On that note, I've changed my contact email from dhavard@comcast.net to
dhavard@darrellhavard.com. Right now we're using the in-laws' computer to do some catching
up.
- 6/06/07-Well folks, it looks like we'll be leaving Hattiesburg
for the Dallas area soon. My wife Kristina, a woodwind specialist, got an offer she
couldn't refuse in the Richardson school district. So, we're cleaning up and packing up
ten years worth of clutter to hit the road at the end of June. I'm going to miss all of
the friendly Hattiesburg folks, musicians, venues, and bands. I've been here long enough
for them to feel like family. The prospect of starting all over again in the city the size
of Dallas is a little overwhelming, but we'll make it work. I'm taking suggestions for
venues if anybody has any. I'm about to be in a much bigger pond.
- 4/10/06-I'm happy to announce I'll be part of the lineup of Jazz in
the Grove 2007 on April 28, 2007, in Bay Springs, MS. I'll be doing some sets in-between
the main stage sets on the side street next to the stage.
I grew up in Bay Springs, MS. A dear departed friend, Dr. Jerald Hughes helped start the
event a few years ago. He also fostered my interest in jazz and is one of the many
supportive people in Bay Springs that fostered my interest in music in general.
I've played Jazz in the Grove a handful of times, either with the JCJC Stage Band, the USM
Jazz Lab I or Jazz Lab II, and the group Dr. Hughes started - The Jazz Reflections. This
will be the first time I'll be able to play on my own bill there, so I'm excited about it.
I haven't had a chance to share the Stick with the Bay Springs folks, either, so that adds
to the excitement. AND, to make it an extra plus, I'm playing with one of my all-time
favorite drummers, Jeff Mills. Jeff
and I have done a little freelancing together, and we had a New Orleans style funk group-
Mojo Funk together as well. He is an A-List drummer and I'm lucky to be playing with him.
He keeps me on my toes - none of my same old junk works with him.
Anyway, I hope to see some of ya'll there.
For instructions on how to get there, check out jazzinthegrove.com.
Oh yeah, ADMISSION IS FREE!
- 1/18/06- Hi all and a belated Happy New Year! As always I've got
plenty of new irons in the fire for this year. Expect some new 2 Zigg Zaggs material, as
well as some guest slots and some solo projects.
-I've put together promo video for myself, if you want to check it out, you can find it on
YouTube
- 12/5/06- Things seem to be slowing down a bit on the gig tip for the
Holiday Season. That's quite alright, because it's given me time to catch up on a thousand
other things, and time to get the original music set together.
-On that note - I've been working with Mr. Vaz Vanelli and his company Songshine on a live
DVD/CD. I made a trip to Tupelo, MS to his restaurant and club, Vanelli's and Papa's Place
respectively, back in October and I'll be making a trip back this weekend, hopefully to
finish the project up. Thanks to Vaz, Graham and the rest of the Songshine crew for their
help and hospitality!
- 9/29/06- Special thanks to PT QUINN for the cool new pic above from
the 1st Annual Stick Festival in Ann Arbor, MI.
- 9/18/2006-THE 2 ZIGG ZAGG'S ALBUM "RIDIN' HIGH" IS NOW
AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD! It's only $5! Just go to afromanmusic.comthen
to Merchandise-'Fro Sto and you'll see the album for download. You'll receive a link in
your email to a temporary site where you can download the album. Hope you enjoy! Still no
word on when the actual CD will be available, though.
- 8/26/2006-It's been a busy couple of months. In July, I was
fortunate enough to visit the Midwest Stick Seminar in Ann Arbor, MI. Organizers Steve
"Oz" Osburn, Glenn Poorman, and PT Quinn(among others) really pulled out all of
the stops this year. They brought out the creme de la creme of the Stick community - Greg
Howard, Bob Culbertson, Steve Adelson, Tom Griesgraber, Gary Jibillian, and the man
himself EMMETT CHAPMAN! And to boot, they managed to put together a street festival for
the teachers and participants to perform in downtown Ann Arbor. Thanks for a great time
ya'll! Check out Glenn Poorman's write-up of the event.
-I went out on the road with Afroman for the first time in about a year at the beginning
of August. Unfortunately, Jody Loc wasn't able to make it out but a good time was had by
all. It was great to see all of the old road homies again. On that note, Tha 2 Zigg Zaggs
have been gaining some steam again on a local level. We've been working with Hungry
Hustler Artist Strainj and his partner/hypeman/beat producer Shugg on some shows. Looks
like we'll have some more shows coming up soon, so keep an eye out on the events page. AND
the 2ZZ album "Ridin' High" will be available for download soon from Afroman's
site Afromanmusic.com. No word yet on when the
actual hardcopy CD will be available.
-Special thanks to the people of St. Cloud, MN for rolling out the red carpet for T-Bone
Pruitt this past week. We had a few performances and jam sessions at the Paramount Arts
Theater. We always thought that the South had a monopoly on hospitality, but the folks in
St. Cloud proved us wrong. Here's to a growing relationship between Hattiesburg, MS and
St. Cloud, MN in the future!
- 6/30/2006-Finally got off of my tush and started editing some live
footy for the a/v page. I have a couple up, but I'm having problems with the others.
Something about the Quicktime files after they're loaded up on the page, cause my browser
to crash when viewed. Anyway, I'm working it out, and it should be back on a roll soon.
Let me know if anyone has any problems with the existing Quicktime movies. Thanks!
- 6/14/2006-Ok, so the a/v page updates have been moving slower than I
thought. I spent quite a bit of time recently editing and authoring a DVD for Hungry
Hustler Records that ate up some of the time I planned on editing footy for the site. I
decided not to use some of the solo footy I planned on using, too, but I've got some newer
and better stuff to use instead. I finally got some decent footy of Mojo Funk recently at
a New Orleans drumming seminar drummer Jeff Mills gave at USM recently.
- 5/9/2006- The jams in Raleigh with Zack Johnson have officially
become a project. The name we've decided on is Kid Video. We've got an official Kid Video MySpace page up now with some
sound and video from a recording session at Studio
313. I'll put some of that content up on my a/v page once I get caught up on some
other projects.
-Speaking of the a/v page, I've got quite a back log of video to put up. I've got some
more T-Bone Pruitt coming from shows at Whiskey Blues and The Shed, Kid Video audio and
video, and some solo jazz from a reception I played at a couple of weeks ago. When I can
dig them up, I'm going to start trickling in some old Cookout, Afro, and solo/side project
footy from a few years ago.
-I traded my SB8 recently for an NS/Stick. It'll be here Thursday, and I can't wait!
-On a much earlier post, I said the 2 Zigg Zaggs album "Ridin' High" for
Afroman's Hungry Hustler Records label would be available on April 18, 2006. Well, that's
not the case. When the album is completely done and sent to the press, I'll make an
"official" release date announcement. Sorry for the delay (I'm ready for it to
be out, too!).
- 4/22/2006- I'm in Raleigh, NC this weekend jamming with some
friends. I've been jamming with drummer Zack Johnson (Squeezetoy, Afroman, Montage), MCs Omatade Adeniyi (Squeezetoy, LowerThirds, solo),
and Dai aka DP (LowerThirds, solo). We've
been playing on each other's recording projects, and Zack and I have been doing some last
minute gigs. Check the Events page.
-I've been turning my Audio/Video
page into a sort of video blog page. I've been setting up the video camera to record a gig
here and there and posting it. Some of the sound and video quality differs, and the
footy's usually from one angle on a tripod, but I thought it'd be worth it to show some of
the wonderful musicians I've had the luck to work with lately. I hope you enjoy, and check
in once a week, or so, for some fresh vids or audio.
- 3/30/2006- special thanks Juan Leon of Strada-Sphere Radio and Zak
Winnick of StickWorld Podcast for including
some 2 Zigg Zaggs and T-Bone Pruitt on their recent Stick Podcasts.
- 3/15/2006- It's been a while since I've put any news up. A few new
developments.
-I've got a weekly duet jazz gig with drummer Steven Taylor starting Sunday March 19, from
11:30 to 2:30 at Fountain's Restaurant in the Ramada Inn in Laurel, MS.
-We finally got a proper domain name for T-Bone Pruitt. You can find his site at t-bonepruitt.com.
-I'm playing with a new group Mojo Funk. Mojo is an
all-star cast of Hattiesburg musicians playing some New Orleans funk, Meters and Galactic
style.
-Special thanks to Humble Root and Pierce Penniless for letting me do some solo
Stick opening sets recently
- 11/24/2005-HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!
-I've got a new obsession- MySpace. Check out my page at MySpace.com/darrellhavard
- 11/12/2005- Ross Walton, manager of the South Mississippi Music
Sampler website, has put together a site for T-Bone Pruitt. Give it a look.
- 10/28/2005- The official release date for Tha 2 Zigg Zaggs
"Ridin' High" is April 18th, 2006.
-There'll be some new quicktime vids of Tha 2 Zigg Zaggs in the studio coming soon!
- 09/29/2005- BACK IN THE 'BURG! Things are starting to return to
normal around here again. I've been able to play with local blues legend and mentor Tommy
"T-Bone" Pruitt again. I've got some pics from a recent gig on the Pics page. I've been trying to
stay on top of the T-Bone gigs on the Events
page, but the gigs have been coming in kind of last-minute.
-Special thanks again to The Griffenz for letting
the 2 Zigg Zaggs open at the 9/17 show.
- 09/09/2005- Katrina- OUCH!! The family stayed in Hattiesburg during
the storm and decided to get the heck out! It was a rough one ya'll, but I guess you've
probably seen enough of the news to know that. Seriously, though, our home is damaged, and
we won't be able to stay there for a while, but we're alive and safe, and we're counting
our blessings. We've taken refuge with family members elsewhere until the cleanup efforts
in Hattiesburg show some more progress. It's bad in Hattiesburg, but my heart goes out to
the people on the coast, and in New Orleans.
- 07/26/2005- Well folks, it's about time I stayed at home. We've just
cancelled all but a handful of our Afroman dates for the rest of the year. ALL IS WELL, we
just needed some family time. All of the scheduled albums by PoBoy, Strainj, Blaq, and Tha
2 Zigg Zaggs will still be released, we're still shooting some videos for the artists, and
we're planning on releasing a DVD of a live show in Palmdale, CA that we've got coming up.
In other words, the Afroman and Hungry Hustler crew are still in business, we're just not
gonna be travelling for a while.
- The good news is now I have time to play some jazz, finish some recording projects, and
Tha 2 Zigg Zaggs are finally get a chance to leave the nest for a while. Which means I
finally have a use for the Events
page. Give it a look, especially if you're in the Hattiesburg and Natchez area.
-I've got some pics from the last gig at Center City Grill in Natchez with drummer Ben
Long up on the Pics page
- 06/14/2005- I finally bit the bullet and bought more drive space for
the site. The result is a beefed up, A/V PAGE. I've added some live takes of some
originals as well as some 2 Zigg Zaggs material.
-My pictures from the 2005 Midwest Stick Seminar are now up on the Pics page
- 06/07/2005-SORRY FOLKS! I guess my site's been down all weekend and
I didn't realize it. Obviously, if you're reading this, things are up and running again.
-I just returned from the 2005 Midwest Stick Seminar in Ann Arbor, MI. What a great
experience! Special thanks to the instructors Greg Howard and Bob
Culbertson for the inspiration and direction and Glenn Poorman and Steve Osbourne of Oz's Music for putting the event on.
- 05/26/2005-Havard
Winds.com a site devoted to Flutist and Woodwind Multi-Instrumentalist Kristina Havard
has just been published. Give it a look! You can also see Kristina in action here on the Audio/Video page.
- 05/03/2005- I got a little teaser together for the 2 Zigg Zaggs
album! I don't quite have the space to keep it here on my site, but you can check it out
at http://www.hungryhustlerrecords.com/zaggs.htm.
I hope you enjoy!
- 04/11/2005-Check out HungryHustlerRecords.com,
a new site devoted to the artists on Afroman's record label including the 2 Zigg Zaggs.
-The recording from the Hippo gig didn't turn out the way I wanted it to (I'm still
learning how to use my new recording gear). I'm going to try to do the set as frequently
as I can on the upcoming Afroman tour, though, and I'll be making recordings for the a/v
page.
-The Afroman crew is about to start another month-long tour starting in the midwest, and
heading west to Cali, Washington and Oregon. Check the AfromanMusic.com tour page for more details.
- 04/01/2005- Fro's going to be playing at the Thirsty Hippo here in
Hattiesburg Thurs. April 7th. I'm looking forward to playing at the old stomping grounds.
I will be doing an opening set of mostly originals. I plan on recording the gig, and
putting some samples up on the a/v page.
- 02/22/2005- It's been awhile since I've checked in. I'm back out on
the road with Fro gang again. This time I've been doing some DJ-ing (in addition to Stick
and keys) in Jody Loc and Mr. Mixx's absence.
- 11/09/2004- I just added some Stick excerpts from the Afroman tour
on the A/V page.
-Special thanks to Zach Johnson from Squeezetoy for filling in on the drums on Jody Loc's
hiatus.
- 11/08/2004- Sorry I haven't checked in a while. We just finished the
bulk of this year's touring. WE'VE DONE SOMETHING LIKE 150 SHOWS THIS YEAR!!
-The Afroman XXXMAS album "Jobe Bells", featuring the 2 Zigg Zaggs, will be
released Novemeber 30th.
-I'll have some new pics and some new stuff for the A/V Page up by the end of the week, so
keep checking in.
- 08/09/2004- We've been soaking up some home time, but Afroman, the
Two Ziggs Zaggs, Mr. Mixx, Blaque, Strainj and the gang are hitting the road again, next
week. The three week tour starts Aug. 17, 2004, and we'll be heading north, all the the
way west, and through the southwest and south on the way back. Check the Afroman tour page for
details.
-The Two Zigg Zaggs just finished a Christmas album for Afroman. The scheduled release
date is Nov. 2, 2004. This is a Christmas album for after the kids are asleep and Mom and
Dad are up dreaming of sugar plum fairies.
-There will also be an artist compilation from Hungry Hustler Records, Afroman's
independent record label. The Two Zigg Zaggs are slated to be on the album.
-Squeezetoy made it back
safely from the AFE tour of the Middle East, and will joining us again for the next leg of
the tour. It's great to have you back guys!! We're looking forward to it.
- 06/28/2004- AFROMAN just finished a month long tour of the east
coast. I gotta give big ups to our boys in Squeezetoy for opening for us on all of those
dates. Check out Squeezetoymusic.com for more
info on the band. They just left the tour to do an Armed Forces tour in the Middle East
(you guys have got more guts than I do!).
-Meanwhile, the Afro crew is heading to the Midwest this week. We'll be in Indiana,
Illinios, and Ohio.
- 04/14/2004- BREAKING NEWS FOR HATTIESBURG AREA COOKOUT FANS!!! It's
a bit last minute, but there will be ONE MORE COOKOUT SHOW at the Thirsty Hippo on Thursday April 15, 2004. It's our
last chance to do a show before Ben Maddox-keys/guitar leaves town for Vermont.
The show will be a benefit for Mike "Mike D" Abernathy and his family. Mike was
the original bass player for Cookout and during my hiatus with Afroman he played bass for
Fro as well. Unfortunately, Mike was involved in a serious work related accident that has
had him in the hospital for quite some time. Please come show your support for Mike D, and
catch one last Cookout show.
- 04/09/2004-I haven't checked in for a few. Some new news.
-Premo "Jody" Stallone and I have been in video production mode lately, so I
haven't had a chance to invent some new Stick oriented events. Our third production has
been a video for Afroman's "Let's Get High Tonight". We've been working with Off Color Films who will be releasing a
colorized, remastered version of the cult classic "Reefer Madness" on the same
day of the new Afroman album release- April 20th, 2004. The new Afroman video will have
clips from the movie in it. The video should be completed soon if it isn't already, and
should be featured on Off Color Film's website as well as Afromanmusic.com
-The new Afroman album "Afroholic: The Better Times" will be available
nationwide and on the Afroman website on 4/20/2004!! Two discs for the price of one!
-Now that the video production dust is settling, the 2 Zigg Zaggs are heading back into
the studio to finish an album.
- 02/03/2004-Mark your calendars, Fro fans. The new Afroman
double-disc, "Afroholic: The Better Times" is due out April 20, 2004!! It will
initially only be available though the Afroman website.
- The band is back in full swing out on the road, mostly in the southeast.
-We've been busy, cooking up some videos to accompany some of the songs. The first,
"Compton Isn't Too Far Away" should be available in Quicktime format soon on AFROMANMUSIC.COM.
-For Hattiesburg area folks, the Stick Quartet is on a short hiatus. I've been in the
woodshed with my new Grand Stick, so I've been taking a break from the jazz gigs.
